A Colorado prison inmate has become the first person in the United States to test positive for bird flu

In a recent outbreak that has killed millions of chickens and turkeys, but federal officials say the general public is still safe.

The infected man was in a pre-release programme and was assisting in the removal of chickens from an infected farm on Thursday evening. 

The man, who was under the age of 40, complained of fatigue for a few days but has since recovered

The man has been isolated and is receiving antiviral treatment.

When bird flu was discovered at the farm in Montrose County, the inmates were asked to assist in the killing and removal of the birds.
