Pedicurist's Insights

"Feet convey a tale," stated Beckett-Gland. When someone wears too-small shoes, their toenails split or their toes curl into hammer or claw toes.

I can determine whether they excessively pronate, roll their feet inward too much, or require an arch support by a bunion and a deviated big toe.

Author of "The Science of Pedicures" Robert Spalding says hyperthickened calluses indicate aberrant pressure sites on the foot or toes.

He checks a patient's shoes before the appointment. “I fit the foot to the shoe because shoes may worsen or cure 90% of foot and toe problems,” Spalding added.

You may reveal your occupation during a meeting. “Our patients include warehouse workers, letter carriers, and restaurant workers,” Spalding added.

"I'll note the contour of their foot, as it splays when pressure is applied, becoming wider and longer with time."
