And stealing their vehicle, a Texas prison system spokesperson said.

Gonzalo Lopez, 46, was murdered at 10:30 p.m. Thursday in Jourdanton, Texas, roughly 55 km south of San Antonio.

Atascosa County law officers disabled the stolen vehicle with spike strips, and shooting occurred, Clark said. He reported no police injuries.

Lopez was slain 220 miles (354 kilometres) southeast of Centerville, Texas, where Clark claimed he killed a Houston family of five and took their vehicle.
