Saturday's flight cancellations for Memorial Day top 1,200

Memorial Day weekend, the start of summer travel, has airline passengers in sticker shock. Flight cancellations are piling up.

FlightAware reported 1,200 cancelled flights as of 2 p.m. EST Saturday. Friday's cancellations totaled 2,300.

More than 240 flights, or 9% of Delta's operations, were cancelled on Saturday.

Travel delays hit Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Delta's hub. 5% of Saturday's flights were cancelled, while 7% were delayed.

Delta said Saturday's cancellations were due to inclement weather and "air traffic control operations," adding that it's attempting to cancel flights 24 hours in advance over Memorial Day weekend.

Delta stated Thursday it would restrict service by 100 daily departures from July 1 to August 7, particularly in the U.S. and Latin America.
