Luke Aikins and Andy Farrington, two cousins, were unable to complete the first "plane exchange" over Arizona skies Sunday night
After one plane spiralled out of control while the two pilots were thousands of feet in the air.
The Red Bull-sponsored flight began about 5:45 p.m. local time, when the two pilots climbed to the skies at an undisclosed site in Arizona.
The two jumped out at 12,100 feet with the airbrake systems activated on both planes over an hour later.
The uncontrollable plane was equipped with a parachute that activated automatically when it reached a particular altitude and was deployed before it hit the ground.
