American Council on Exercise President and Chief Science Officer Cedric Bryant said that walking "absolutely can" help people lose weight.
Low-impact aerobic exercise helps people to burn calories and expend energy, so "it may undoubtedly assist with weight reduction," Bryant said.
"The most essential thing is to choose an activity that you like and that you will engage in."
Bryant suggests that you walk for at least 45 minutes a day on most days of the week if you are trying to lose weight through walking.
Aiming for 45 to an hour of brisk walking a day is the best way to lose or maintain a decent amount of weight, according to the author.
