the US Navy shoots down a drone using an electric-powered laser

Earlier this year, the US Navy used an electric-powered laser to shoot down a drone for the first time.

In February, the newly developed laser was tested on a drone in New Mexico and beamed from the deck of a battleship.

According to the Navy, laser weapons offer various benefits, including the ability to destroy sensors and analyse the damage they may do to targets.

Because lasers are completely electric, they are less dangerous than other military weapons like explosives.

During the 1980s, the Navy conducted comparable testing, but using chemical-based laser technology, which posed considerable logistical challenges for deployment in an operational context

'Those sorts of lasers never made it into the fleet or into any other service'
